Which Photo Is Better? What the Score Distribution Means

BestPick can say which of two uploads scored higher on the same rubric. It cannot say which will get more matches or likes. Pairwise win rates are not published. On the scoreboard that does exist, 66.0% of dating photos (n=527) and 40.6% of social photos (n=1,484) sit below 60, so 'better' is usually the less-weak photo.

What a two-photo comparison actually does

Both files go through the same five-criterion rubric for the goal you picked. Each criterion is 0–100. The overall score is the mean of those five, computed on the BestPick server. The higher overall score is the better photograph on that rubric. If the model's named winner disagrees with its own scores, the server keeps the scores.

That is a comparison of execution, not of future outcomes. Search demand for this page is 'which picture is better' and 'what picture should I use'. The honest answer is: the one that fails fewer of the five rows, on the goal you actually need.

The distributions you are comparing against

Dating median 55, mean 54.5. Social median 62, mean 61.7. An 80 is not the typical winner in a two-photo set; 2.7% of dating photos and 3.2% of social photos reach 80 at all. Most head-to-heads in this world are 48 vs 57, not 91 vs 88.

How to use the five rows when two scores are close

If overall scores sit within a few points, read the weakest criterion on each photo. Dating: expression and background are the usual last rows. Social: composition and visual hook. A 56 that loses on background against a 54 that loses on lighting is not a coin flip — the first photo still has the more common dating failure.

Do not mix goals in one comparison. A dating 60 and an Instagram 60 are not the same 'better'.

What 'better' is not

It is not a match prediction, a like prediction, or a recruiter callback. It is not a gender result. It is not a clothing-colour result. Those figures are not in the file, so they are not on this page.

The one with the higher overall score on the same goal's rubric. If the scores are close, prefer the photo whose weakest criterion is less severe. This page does not publish a win rate for photo A vs photo B across the dataset.

What if both photos score below 60?

That is normal for dating (66.0% below 60) and common for social (40.6% ). 'Better' still means the higher of the two. You may still want a retake rather than a profile built from two weak photos.

Can BestPick tell me which photo will get more matches?

No. Matches and likes are not observed. The comparison is rubric vs rubric.

Why not publish pairwise win rates?

They are not in the published methodology snapshot. This report only uses figures that file already contains: means, medians, below-60 and 80+ shares.
