Answers: what is a good instagram photo score
Instagram and Social Photo Scores: What 1,484 Analyses Show
A 'good' Instagram / social photo on BestPick is closer to 62 than to 90. Across 1,484 scored social-general analyses the mean is 61.7 and the median is 62. 40.6% sit below 60; only 3.2% reach 80. Authenticity is already high; composition is not.
This is a feed rubric, not a dating rubric
Social-general photos are scored on Composition & Framing, Vibe & Mood, Visual Hook, Aesthetic Appeal, and Authenticity. None of those rows is Facial Expression or Eye Contact. A photo that would be a strong dating headshot can still fail here if the crop is clumsy or the frame has no reason to stop a thumb.
The social mean (61.7) is 7.2 points above the dating mean (54.5). That is not 'Instagram photos are better people'. It is a different test, on a larger sample, with authenticity pulling the average up.
The social / Instagram sample
1,484 social-general photos have an overall score — the largest publishable goal in the snapshot. 436 also have the five-criterion breakdown. Creative portfolio is a separate goal (mean 69.1, n=353) and is not mixed into these rows.
| Measure | Value |
|---|---|
| Goal | Social / Instagram |
| Scored analyses | 1,484 |
| Mean overall score | 61.7 / 100 |
| Median overall score | 62 / 100 |
| Share below 60 | 40.6% |
| Share at or above 80 | 3.2% |
| Analyses with per-criterion scores | 436 |
The feed is authentic and badly framed
Authenticity is the runaway strength: mean 75.3, highest of the five in 67.7% of criterion-scored photos. Composition & Framing is the typical failure: mean 56.7, last in 28.7%. Visual Hook is almost as often last (28.0%) despite a higher mean (59.5). Vibe sits in between. Aesthetic Appeal (64.2) is competent and rarely the worst row.
Read that as a product finding, not a vibe. People already look like themselves in this sample. They do not place themselves in the frame, and the picture often has no distinct element. Filters are not the main leak; crop is.
| Rank | Criterion | Mean | Weakest in | Strongest in |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Authenticity | 75.3 | 4.1% | 67.7% |
| 2 | Aesthetic Appeal | 64.2 | 5.7% | 9.2% |
| 3 | Visual Hook | 59.5 | 28.0% | 5.0% |
| 4 | Vibe & Mood | 57.5 | 18.3% | 1.4% |
| 5 | Composition & Framing | 56.7 | 28.7% | 1.6% |
Ranked by mean. Weakest / strongest = share of photos where this criterion was the lowest / highest of the five.
How to read a personal Instagram score
A 62 is the middle of this sample, not a slight. Below 60 is common (40.6%) but not the majority, unlike dating. 80+ is still rare (3.2%). If authenticity is already 70 and composition is 45, the edit is the crop, not a new personality.
This score is not likes, reach, or saves. BestPick does not observe Instagram engagement.
Takeaway
Social photos in this dataset already look like real people (authenticity mean 75.3) and still average only 61.7 overall because composition and hook lag. A good Instagram score on BestPick is a competent crop of an unforced picture, not an 80+ filtered hero shot.
Questions this report answers
What is a good Instagram photo score on BestPick?
The median in this sample is 62. 60–74 is competent; 75+ is strong and uncommon. Only 3.2% of social photos reach 80.
Why is the Instagram mean higher than the dating mean?
Different rubric and different uploads. Authenticity averages 75.3 on social photos and has no dating equivalent. Dating's lowest rows are expression and background. The 7.2-point gap is not a like-rate comparison.
Should I pick the photo that looks most edited?
Not on this rubric. Authenticity is the strongest social criterion (mean 75.3, strongest in 67.7%). Heavy smoothing is a way to lose the row this sample usually wins.
Does this predict Instagram likes?
No. Likes, views and follower growth are not in the dataset.
What this page does not claim
